Outdoor Program Jobs

  • Climbing Gym Attendant

    • JOB TITLE:  Climbing Gym Attendant
    • WAGE RATE:  $7.75 per hour
    • SUPERVISOR:  Climbing Gym Manager & Coordinator of Outdoor Program
    • JOB FUNCTION:  To provide a welcoming, positive and quality program experience to patrons coming to the climbing gym. To educate and provide risk management to ensure a safe environment is sustained.
    • HOURS:  6-15 hours per week (Fall & Spring) – 6-30 hours per week (Summer)
    • DURATION:  Undetermined

     

    LEARNING OUTCOMES

    1. Practice and improve communication skills by assisting patrons.
    2. Practice teaching skills by educating customer in how to properly use equipment.
    3. Learn to educate others about climbing in our gym.
    4. Connect with other students and organizations on campus.

    DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

    1. Assist customers in providing a safe and educational environment.
    2. Be an active Outdoor Program team player being involved on program events.
    3. Maintain active communication with other staff about program needs.
    4. Perform routine equipment assessments.
    5. Maintain professionalism in appearance and attitude.
    6. Continue to increase in knowledge and competency as a Campus Recreation employee.
    7. Be willing to educate, model, and monitor policies.
    8. Be able to perform emergency action procedures in the event of an emergency.
    9. Promote Outdoor Program events and philology to patrons.

    PHYSICAL  REQUIREMENTS:

    1. Ability to lift 30 lbs

    MENTAL REQUIREMENTS:

    1. Possess a passion for working with people.
    2. Be comfortable with stretching yourself and keeping a positive attitude.

    EQUIPMENT/DEVICE OPERATION:

    1. Computer and Rec Trac software.
    2. Climbing equipment.

    QUALIFICATIONS:

    1. Enrolled in 6 or more credits per semester
    2. Adult First Aid/CPR with AED*

    *Campus Recreation provides this training to all employees at no charge.

    PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:

    1. Able to work on weekends


  • Outdoor Rental Center Attendant

    • JOB TITLE: Outdoor Rental Center Attendant
    • WAGE RATE: $7.75 per hour
    • SUPERVISOR: Outdoor Rental Center Manager & Graduate Assistant of Outdoor Program
    • JOB FUNCTION: To provide a positive and quality program experience to customers renting equipment, signing up for trips, and/or planning for their own outdoor adventure.
    • HOURS: 6-20 hours per week (Spring and Fall) – 9-40 hours per week (Summer)
    • DURATION: Undetermined

     

    LEARNING OUTCOMES

    1. Practice and improve communication skills by assisting customers.
    2. Practice teaching skills by educating customer in how to properly use equipment.
    3. Learn to maintain and repair outdoor equipment.
    4. Connect with other students and organizations on campus.

    DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

    1. Assist customers in renting equipment, signing up for trips and planning their own trips.
    2. Be an active Outdoor Program team player being involved on program events.
    3. Maintain active communication with other staff about program needs.
    4. Perform equipment maintenance routine and repair.
    5. Maintain professionalism in appearance and attitude.
    6. Continue to increase in knowledge and competency as a Campus Recreation employee.
    7. Be willing to educate, model, and monitor policies.
    8. Be able to perform emergency action procedures in the event of an emergency.
    9. Complete other Outdoor Program projects as needed.

  • Trip Leader

    • WAGE RATE: $60.00 to $89.00 per day depending on responsibilities and characteristics of the trip being led
    • SUPERVISOR: Trip Manager & Coordinator Outdoor Program
    • JOB FUNCTION: To provide and lead a positive and quality experience for trip participants in remote wilderness settings.
    • Our trips focus on offering to students an opportunity to enhance their experience at Boise State by providing lifelong and enriching outdoor experiences. From 1-day excursions to week-long expeditions, Trip Program offers a variety of trips for students to choose from.
    • The major focus of this position includes group and risk management, teaching skills, trip planning, decision-making process, and community building.
    • Trainings are offered to staff to acquire the necessary confidence in both technical and group facilitation skills.
    • HOURS: on weekends, between 2 and 6 trips per semester. Academic breaks trips go from 3 to 10 days.
    • DURATION: minimum 1-year commitment

    DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

    • Attend mandatory multi-day trainings and meeting totaling 120 hours in your first year on the program.
    • Ability to work extensive hours on weekends.
    • Comfortable and willing to learn technical and facilitation skills in a variety of different outdoor activities like climbing, backpacking, river rafting, biking, stand up paddle board, kayaking, and canoeing.
    • Manage physical and emotional safety of participants.
    • Strong desire to help participants and co-leaders seek and learn from a variety of challenges.
    • Provide effective communication and customer service skills.
    • Execute emergency action procedures when necessary.
    • Establish and maintain clear communication with co-leaders and supervisors.
    • Maintain a clean and organized environment before, during and after trips, which includes gear clean-up and management.
    • Model professionalism in appearance and attitude.

     PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS

    • Ability to lift 35 lbs
    • Willing to provide positive trip experiences in a variety of outdoor settings where weather, hiking distances, or paddling can be challenging.

    MENTAL REQUIREMENTS

    • Possess a passion for working with others and being a team player.
    • Be comfortable with stretching yourself.
    • Maintain positive energy and attitude.
    • Commitment to Outdoor Program mission and core values.
    • Be understanding and sensitive to working with diverse populations.

    EQUIPMENT/DEVICE OPERATION

    • Drive 12 person van once 20 years of age.
    • Microsoft works and rental software.
    • Outdoor equipment.

    QUALIFICATIONS

    • Enrolled in 6 or more credits per semester
    • Must obtain CPR, AED, and First Aid certification within 45 days of hire*.

    PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS

    • Personal or professional experience in any outdoor activity.
    • Previous experience working as a counselor in summer camps, challenge courses, or outdoor programs.
